What is Grace? | Balancing Grace + Faith for Healing (Pt 1)
For a lot of brain retrainers, connecting the dots between self-guided neuroplasticity and Biblical faith is easy to see. You are carving new pathways by faith, using tools to help rewire the brain. Right?
But these programs are missing an understanding of God’s grace. That’s a real shame because understanding the balance of faith and grace was a key component to my own recovery. And I know it can help you, too.
Faith and grace are like sodium and chloride—poisonous on their own but together, they make salt. Faith and grace are similar. Too much of one and not enough of the other leads to legalism or an inappropriate view of God’s sovereignty. But the right mix in our hearts releases power to heal and transform our lives.
So what is God’s grace?
Grace is the unrestricted outworking of His infinite love for you. It’s His provision, independent of your behaviour. Why? Because God is gracious (Exodus 34:6); that’s his character. We can’t earn it; we can only receive this amazing grace through his Son, Jesus.
All too often, Christians confuse God’s grace with His will. It’s often taught that if you pray but don’t heal, then it must not be God’s will or timing to heal you. Or there’s some other reason God didn’t heal. Folks, this thinking isn’t Biblical.
It’s our choices, not His grace, that can limit God’s will in our lives.
In Psalm 78:41 the Holy Spirit writes,
“Yes, again and again they tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.”
In Matthew 13:58 and Mark 6:5, we learn that Jesus did not do many works in his hometown because of their unbelief.
Here’s what I want you to know: it is absolutely God’s will for you to be well here on earth (3 John 2). He is not withholding your healing from you. In fact, God wants you healthy more than you want to be healthy.
So if God isn’t holding back but your healing seems stagnant, then what? Where is God’s grace? And what about faith?
Let’s explore that and more as we dig into this series.
